| IRS Helps with Economic Stimulus Checks
The I.R.S. is offering help to help low-income people get their economic stimulus checks. They're opening more than 300 offices this Saturday, March 29th to make sure that the people who don't ordinarily file tax returns don't miss out on the payment. Workers at the I.R.S. offices this weekend will help those prepare the forms they need to so they get their check. Four offices will be open in the valley this weekend, three in Fresno and one in Visalia. .
IRS recommends governance policies
Sound nonprofit governance, while not dictated by federal tax law, is important to the successful operation of tax-exempt groups, the IRS says in an article posted on its website. To encourage such internal oversight, the IRS "commends" a series of policies and practices, which it says are directed to public charities, but also can be beneficial to private foundations and other exempt groups. The article covers a number of topics, including a nonprofit's mission, governing body, governance and management policies, financial statements and 990 reporting, and transparency and accountability. There are several specific areas for which the IRS recommends adoption of formal policies, says the Nonprofit Risk Management Center in its March 19 newsletter.
State won’t tax Iowans’ rebate checks
Veterans at the Iowa Veterans Home will be able to spend their special federal rebate checks any way they choose under a bill signed by Gov. Chet Culver today. It will mean at least $300 each for the more than 700 veterans at the home in Marshalltown, if they file a tax return this year. Normally, residents who receive financial assistance have to report any income and apply it toward their room and board fees. Any Iowans who have already filed their 2007 income tax return, or who file it between now and January 2009, will not have to pay state income taxes on the rebate checks they get from the federal government this spring under House File 2417. All right, its the law, said Culver, who pointed out that the legislation passed both chambers of the Iowa Legislature unanimously.
